A Literary Hour: England, my EnglandJohn Willmer
Wednesday, 16th May, 2018, at 1.00 pm
Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
This is my own, my native land!
Whose heart hath ne’er within him burned,
As home his footsteps he hath turned,
From wandering on a foreign strand!
Sir Walter Scott
Come and enjoy an hour of readings about England,
this “green and pleasant land”.
An hour only enables a short selection of the beautiful writings about England, but we shall attempt to reflect what people have felt about England over time, including pieces from people loath to leave or longing to return to her; an occasional patriotic statement or event; some quirks and oddities. Inevitably things have changed over time and for those who do not necessarily welcome all changes there will be a good touch of nostalgia!
