Monuments and Memorials
In 1978 The Camden History Society began to record the Monuments and Memorials in the Church, the Churchyard and the Additional Burial Ground of Hampstead Parish Church. The result, in 1986, was a thorough record of each inscription and other information on a set of over 2500 forms which are lodged at the Camden Local Studies and Archive Centre . This lists here are indexes to those forms. There are about 7000 names included on the index but we would stress that they are names only - they are not necessarily buried here. In particular names without dates usually indicate a reference to that person rather than that s/he is buried here.
We are happy to help with queries but you will need to vist the Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre (Information) to look at the transcriptions. Further weathering has taken place since the record was made. The Churchyards are now Sites of Special Nature Conservancy Interest so they are protected..
The Parish Registers and other documents are at the London Metropolitan Archive but are available on CD Rom from our online shop
Christopher Wade of the Camden History Society has produced a book, Buried in Hampstead, which can be obtained from the church, price £7.50, plus postage and packing. This is an interesting guide to notable people buried here and to graves of particular interest. Tomb Trails are also available at the church [20p each] as a guide to some of the most interesting graves.
We would consider adding more information and links to other websites from individuals on the lists - if you would like this done please let us know.
We are indebted to Mrs Pat Gardner for her patience in typing up the list and enabling it to be put into a database
Whilst every care has been taken with this information we are unable
to guarantee that it is in all respects accurate.
